A recent survey was released which reports on the online technology habits of United States teens. Among the findings, was the fact that 95 percent of teens age 13 to 17 years old have a smartphone. In addition, approximately 45 percent of teens in that age group are online “almost constantly.” When it comes to their desired social media platform, Facebook has fallen out of favor.

 

The latest report came from the Pew Research Center which says that its now YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat that are the most popular choices for teens online. The survey showed that 85 percent of the U.S. teens use YouTube, while 72 percent use Instagram, and 69 percent use Snapchat. Just 51 percent of those surveyed said they are using Facebook, while only 32 percent said they are using Twitter. Of the social media services, SnapChat and YouTube were each used most by often, according to the survey responses.

 

During the Pew Center’s 2014-2015 survey of teens, 71 percent of the teens who were surveyed said they were Facebook users. It was a clear favorite back then, but within just three or four years, the other more visual social media platforms seem to be taking over. Of those, both Instagram and Snapchat provide quick content for users to consume.

 

The biggest takeaway from the Pew Center’s latest survey is that no longer is there just one social media platform, site, or app that rules over the rest. Facebook used to be the “cool place” for most kids to share things with their friends, but it seems to have fallen out of favor with these newer and quicker content sharing options available.

 

Snapchat has shown the ability to offer a bit more privacy than the others, which could be part of why it is so widely used, while Instagram allows for consumption of photos and images as well. Instagram adds new feature so users can share posts in stories

The popular social media app and website Instagram has opened up a new feature as part of their options. Now users will be able to share someone’s post within their story. The new feature is said to be useful in that it will allow for easier promotion of a friend’s announcement, or to help show off a brand. Overall, it seems like it will give Instagram a similar feature to other social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.

According to The Verge, the new Instagram feature lets an app user share a post of their own or one from a public account they’re following, as a part of their story. The shared post will include the username of whoever originally posted it, and a link to their post. Only public account posts can be shared to stories. In addition, users have the option to prevent their public posts from being shared, if they want.

It’s simple to use the new feature too. A user just goes to the particular post they want to share as part of their Instagram story. Tapping on the paper airplane icon above a public post will give the option to “create a Story.” By tapping on this option, users can customize the post for re-sharing like a sticker on their story. The post can be edited with additional text, scribbling, or other decorations. It can also be rotated, scaled, and moved around to really give it a different look as part of the story.

Some people are referring to this almost like a “regram” or “re-sharing” option for the popular photo sharing platform. Basically, the new feature allows for sharing of a post with a user’s additional commentary or reaction along with it. It seems like a new way to battle the other popular storylike app, Snapchat.

While the new Instagram feature is available for only the Android app this week, it’s said that the iOS app will have the feature available next week. This latest option seems to add more potential for easy sharing of content between accounts, similar to how Twitter posts can be “retweeted” or Facebook posts can be shared to a user’s timeline for others to see.
