Google planning to challenge iPhone X with new Pixel 3 phones this year

Google is looking to ramp up its competition in the smartphone market as they directly challenge Apple’s iPhone X. Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has said they are planning two new models for release later in 2018. These will be the anticipated Google Pixel 3 smartphones with a few interesting new updates.

As Bloomberg reported via sources familiar with the subject on Wednesday, the newest Google smartphones are expected to be called the “Pixel 3” and “Pixel 3 XL.” The larger of the two phones, the XL model, will feature a thicker bezel at the bottom of the screen which will be almost “edge-to-edge.” In addition, it will feature a notch, something many of the smartphone manufacturers have been using in their designs. Meanwhile, the Pixel 3 models will be similar in terms of their visual presentation to the Pixel 2. That means no edge-to-edge look or notch included on the Pixel 3 phone.

Google’s latest smartphones will also arrive just after Apple unveils its newest iPhone models. It’s expected that Apple will release a new lower-cost model of the iPhone, as well as two other phones: a new size iPhone X and a 6.50-inch screen size phone. Details of the what all the newest iPhones will include are still scarce despite plenty of speculation on the internet.

The news of Google’s latest updated model of their Pixel phone shows that the company is continuing to try to battle with market leaders Apple and Samsung. Both companies have sold many more units than Google’s phones, despite the fact that the Google phones have been given heaps of praise as some of the best Android model phones available today.

It’s being said that once again Verizon Wireless Inc. will serve as the exclusive cellular carrier for the latest Pixel phones in the United States. The new Pixel 3 model smartphones are expected to be unveiled in October of this year with prices and more specific details expected to come in the months leading up to release.

Internet Trends report shows smartphone shipments were down for first time in 2017

It appears that the growth of the mobile phone market may have stalled as a new report has shown that smartphone shipments were down for the first year in 2017. The new information comes from venture capitalist Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report. It presented the evidence that smartphone shipments declined by 0.5 percent in 2017, which could be a significant trend to take note of.

As The Verge reported, the 2016 findings were that smartphone shipments showed a two percent growth. However, in 2017 that wasn’t the case, as shipments declined by 0.5 percent. In addition, it’s mentioned that the average selling price for smartphones has fallen in recent times. This seems to indicate that more people are choosing to stay with an older model mobile phone they have rather than rushing out to get the newest model each year.

It’s also mentioned in the latest trends report that internet user growth was up seven percent in 2017. In the prior year, internet user growth was up 12 percent. The newest number seems to indicate some slowing in terms of how many new people are becoming internet users. On average, the vast number of people who do currently use the internet are doing so for about 5.9 hours per day.

When it comes to smartphones, there have been so many different models released in recent years that it’s become easier to get a good deal. People can buy a decent model that is a year or two old and still enjoy good specs and features with that phone. The newest phones are having trouble wowing anyone with the features which may seem too gimmicky at the moment. However, one has to think there will be some room for improvements and upgrades with concepts such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and the Blockchain all becoming very relevant for future technology.

Motorola Reveals New G and E Series Phones

Motorola’s G series is a popular phone with a loyal customer base. The company is adding to its Moto range with four devices in the G6 and E series which are expected to be available online and in stores this May or June. The smartphones fall within the 100 to 300 dollar price range, although they could be cheaper depending on carrier pricing. The smartphones’ features still fall short of higher-end sophistication, but reviewers believe the Moto G6, the G6 Play, the Moto G5 Plus and the E5 Play are superior to other phones in the same class.

Jacob Kastrenakas of The Verge highlights a few of the differences between the phones but acknowledges that the lines between them tend to blur. For instance, the screen sizes range from 5.5 to 6 inches with all but the Moto E5 Play having an 18:9 aspect ratio. Each phone runs on Snapdragon and boast a powerful battery.

The G6 model features Gorilla Glass instead of the polymer glass found in other models. Each model has thin bezels and curved edges, features that Kastrenakas says give the phones a good “feel” and are suggestive of higher-end models.

Of the group, only the G6 offers dual-cameras and a portrait option. The other models offer standard front and rear-facing cameras. The Moto E Play is the baseline model with features that make it dependable but not entirely praise-worthy. At 2800 MAH, the battery is smaller than others in the series and the display is smaller as well. Some users have found the display lackluster and offering only below-average clarity.

Still, Motorola is producing smartphones that have a global following. The Moto E5 and the Moto G6 Plus aren’t being released in the United States, while no one else in the world has the option to purchase the Moto E5 Plus other than U.S. dwellers.

The All-Screen Dream Smartphone is In the Works

When people are asked what the ideal smartphone is, the common responses that they give is a phone with all screen and no borders. There are no buttons or anything other than a screen. There is good news for those fans. This is very close to becoming a reality. For one thing, there have been smartphones released with a screen that takes up more space than usual. As a matter of fact, the smartphone is almost all screen and no borders. One company that comes to mind is Samsung. They have released the Galaxy S8 with the endless screen. Of course other companies are jumping on the bandwagon with what they can do with their screens.

Given that the smartphone market is heating up, it is important for other smartphone companies to make sure that they are coming up with something that is innovative. While Samsung does have the lions share of the smartphone market along with Apple, there are plenty of other companies that are just competing for a share in the market profits. However, the one who manages to bring forth something very new for the consumer is going to be the one to beat out all of the other competitors.

The edge-less phone is going to be the next step for smartphone technology. This is going to be the one that is going to have people in amazement. When they get to enjoy all of the benefits of a smartphone with a larger screen and no borders, then they are going to be enjoying devices more. Of course there are plenty of other inventions that people can bring forth in order to get themselves ahead of the smartphone market.

Verizon Wireless to Start Locking New Smartphones

Verizon Wireless announced on Monday that it will soon start locking new smartphone purchases made in store or online. This lock would exist for a fixed period of time, during which the user would be unable to insert a new SIM card and activate service through a different cellular carrier.

In recent years, Verizon has sold unlocked smartphones in their retail and online stores. When a customer would buy a new Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, a Verizon SIM card would come pre-installed in the device, but the owner could remove it at any time and activate a new network either in the United States or abroad. Verizon had agreed to follow this process as part of settlement with the FCC, which granted the company access to a block of 4G network space in exchange for not blocking customers from switching networks.

Verizon’s new policy regarding locked phones is expected to go into effect this spring. The company does not believe it contradicts the agreement with the FCC, primarily because the driver of the change is related to theft protection. Verizon believes that by locking all new smartphones after purchase, it will deter criminals from trying to steal the devices.

Verizon has yet to reveal how long the locking policy will apply to new phones. Currently, other major U.S. carriers have similar rules in place. At&T locks smartphones for a minimum of 60 days, while T-Mobile’s wait period is 40 days.

As a result of this announcement from Verizon, more of the network’s customers may choose to shop directly from manufacturers like Apple and Samsung. When a phone is purchased directly from one of those companies’ stores, the device is delivered fully unlocked with no restrictions on what type of SIM card can be activated on it.

Upcoming Phones in the First Part of 2018

This is another exciting time to be a smartphone owner. For one thing, LG, Moto, Samsung and the other smartphone giants are getting their phones ready for release. These phones have some good updates that are going to make their phones faster as well as more durable. One thing to expect from the upcoming smartphones is high resolution video playback and recording, better security, and plenty of other features that make the smartphones worthwhile. One good thing about the chances of the upcoming smartphones is that they are always going to sell because of the need for upgrades.

The type of smartphone to get depends on the type of features one is looking for. People that live a rougher lifestyle may want a smartphone that has features that enhance the durability of the item. For instance, they may want something that is waterproof. The LG G7 is one phone that is going to be waterproof. This allows people to use the phone even if they have an accident that causes it to be wet. For people that want to have the latest and greatest, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is looking to be that phone. However, there might be some underrated gems that are going to outperform Samsung.

For people that are looking forward to these phones, there are a few things that they can do in order to make sure that they get the latest batch. One thing they can do is find out when they are being released. Another thing they can do is see if their carrier is going to carry the phones. They can pre-order the phones and get them shipped to their homes or just buy them at the store of their choice.

Smartphone Sales Figures Reveal No Surprises

The current landscape of smartphones looks promising for some manufacturers. For others, the landscape can be best described as dire. Smartphones are like any other product. Certain releases and brands will be hits while others find being called misses to be charitable. Samsung has done quite well in the current market. Sales of Samsung smartphones remain strong even though some believed the company would not do so well. The sale of Galaxy S7 models at a discount definitely aided Samsung’s sales.

Apple experienced a surprising dip. Overall, Apple’s stock has done quite well this year. Then again, the strength of the stock market overall has been strong. Apple is a diversified company so a dip in smartphone sales probably wouldn’t be enough to cause major stock headaches. If the company can survive the Apple Watch fiasco, it can handle a drop in smartphone sales.

Windows Phones remain steady in a consistent direction. Unfortunately, that direction is down. Consumers flat out are not interested in buying Windows Phones. How long are these phones going to last in the market until the plug is pulled?

If nothing else, the current sales figures show customers like to be consistent. Top sellers continue to be top sellers. Poor performers find moving up the ladder to be difficult.

Customers really need a great reason to switch brands when they are already happy with a particular manufacturer and product. Samsung reaps the rewards of these consumer sentiments while the Windows Phone suffers.

Can things change sales-wise in the future? Of course, things can potentially change. The likelihood of actual change, however, remains doubtful. Consumers just like to remain true to their current purchasing habits.
