Hulu updates app for viewer preferences, display, & new Live TV features

As the battle over the streaming media market continues, Hulu is making some changes that faithful viewers may welcome. The streaming service is giving its desktop and mobile apps an update to allow for better control over viewing preferences or suggestions. In addition, the service is trying to make their Hulu with Live TV aspect of the subscription service even better than before.


The Verge reported on Thursday that Hulu users can now get a better handle on all those suggestions and recommendations that Hulu provides to them. Basically, if a viewer has little to no interest in the recommended content, they can tell Hulu to stop giving those suggestions. Hulu’s VP of product Richard Irving said when a user chooses to dismiss the recommendations it will “remove the series, movie or sports league” from being recommended in the future.


Hulu is also changing the way a video appears on a viewer’s screen. There will now be a “portrait player” available to give viewers a choice of that view instead of the standard landscape display. That will be helpful with the Live TV aspect of the service, as it allows for a user to view the video at the top of their mobile phone with the channel listings underneath it. Speaking of that, the guide that most Hulu with Live TV viewers are currently able to see, is finally being added for smartphones.


There will also be a new Live TV control on the way. The company is reportedly giving viewers an icon available in the main navigation bar of the app or web interface. That icon can be clicked or tapped on to go to the last Live TV channel a viewer was watching.


Hulu has said they will debut the updated desktop version of their new format next week for only Live TV customers. Other Hulu subscribers without Live TV will see the new changes as of this summer. These latest moves should help Hulu as they continue to fight within a space they were among the original streaming services in. However, the streaming TV channels battle has really seemed to take shape within the past few years as Google, DirecTV, Sling TV, Sony, and Amazon are among those fighting in the space.

Other than Tik Tok and Whatsapp, there are a few other apps that are quite popular. One of them is the Google Map that saw around 22.4 million downloads in first three months of 2018. Another favorite app in the top 10 is the iQiyi created by Chinese tech company Baidu that saw 22.6 million downloads in the first quarter of 2018. According to the company, they have more than 480 million users who spend around 5.6 billion hours every month on their app. Even though Facebook has lost its top position, it is still on the top 10 list on the App Store. Another app that is not far behind is Instagram that has been downloaded about 31 million times in the past three months. Whatsapp, the popular messaging service, owned by Facebook, also has 33.8 million downloads in the first few months of 2018 with 1.5 billion monthly users.

YouTube has continuously been one of the top apps with 35.3 million downloads in 3 months of 2018. The free app comes second on the top downloaded apps list from the Apple Store. While this is the most recent list, it is to be seen if there will be more apps that would be able to overtake the top ones as we move into the second quarter of 2018.

3,000 New TV Episodes Set to Stream on Hulu Thanks to 20th Century Fox Deal

Hulu announced on their website today that they will be launching 3,000 new television episodes on their streaming service due to a new agreement with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.

These episodes will be from shows that are currently popular on cable television as well as dramas and comedies. Hulu has received streaming rights to shows such as “Bones,” “Burn Notice,” and “Glee.” Hulu will also be streaming older television series as well, such as “MAS*H” and “NYPD Blue.”

The list also includes episodes from shows that have completed and/or been canceled, such as:

“How I Met Your Mother,” “Raising Hope,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Better Off Ted,” “Reba,” “Life in Pieces,” “White Collar,” “The Practice,” “Don’t Trust the B—in Apartment 23,” “The Grinder,” “Blue Collar,” “Saving Grace,” “Lie To Me,” “Graceland,” “Dollhouse,” “Wilfred,” “The Glades,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Hill Street Blues,” and “The Bob Newhart Show.”

Even though 20th Century Fox Television Distribution owns one third of Hulu, the streaming service still needs to vye for the right to stream 20th Century’s content. Thankfully, they have been able to come to multiple agreements since their collaboration.

Previously, Hulu announced that they received permission from 20th Century Fox to stream episodes of “Bob’s Burgers,” “Futurama,” “American Dad,” and more.

Another deal arrived when 20th Century Fox and Hulu arranged for the streaming of television shows such as “This Is Us,” “Last Man on Earth,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “Homeland.”

Hulu has stated that these new television series episodes will be available to be streamed to subscribers’ in-home devices in the coming weeks, with no definitive release date set for any of the shows. TechCrunch states that it’s predicted that some of the episodes will be released by the end of the summer, and the full list of content should be accessible by the end of the year.

Hulu notes that they will be announcing the inclusion of even more television series episodes in the coming weeks.

Securus Is Easy For Our Church To Use

Our whole church is involved in a ministry that works for everyone because it was designed to help them get involved with people who need ministry and need help. We want to be sure that we are helping as many people as we can, and that is why we all as a church got together to start using Securus when we could. We have been using it ever since, and it is a very easy thing to manage. I thought that I would have to do a lot more work to explain to everyone how it works, but Securus really did create the most functional app possible.
Their app gives us a video feed into the jail where we can see who we are working with, and we have actually assigned certain people to work with certain other people. We are trying to build relationships, and we have even welcomed some inmates into our church once they have gotten out. We are not only helping to build people up, but we are able to see them so that they know that they have a partner in what we are doing.
