Xiaomi and Baidu Unite to Undertake AI and Internet of Things

Xiaomi, a technology maker à la Apple, and Baidu, a high-powered Chinese search engine, will collaborate to develop artificial intelligence and the internet of things.

The companies revealed their partnership at Xiaomi’s Beijing conference on Tuesday. Baidu claims the title of the third highest valued public Chinese technology business, and Xiaomi is globally known as a very profitable privately-owned company.

Boasting a financial backing of $86 billion, Baidu concentrates on tech like AI and deep learning. Xiaomi, on the other hand, has made its name known in China and in developing markets with its low-cost devices.

Although this is the partnership’s first public outing, several Xiaomi devices contain Baidu’s operating system DuerOS, which was unmarked as a product of the company until now.

The two companies are not making all details of their collaboration public at this point. However, we know they will develop technologies related to computer optics, voice recognition, deep learning, and further improvement of DuerOS. Future projects could include self-driving vehicles and robotics as these are two of Baidu’s interests.

If this collaboration leads to advancements beyond the Chinese market, it could validate the perks of tech sharing and establish both businesses as even stronger competitors in their respective fields.

In particular, Baidu has previously proven its commitment to alliances with hardware companies in order to promote its technologies. It waives license fees for the DuerOS with around 130 businesses, thus making it onto the hardware for smart tech as well as home appliances.

Earlier this year, Baidu collaborated with the start-up Raven to create a smart speaker. The company also worked with the cutting edge Swedish company, Teenage Engineering, to create the unusually designed Raven.

Samsung Announces a new Battery Technology

South Korean’s multinational conglomerate Samsung is always hitting the headlines for innovating cutting-edge products or technology. Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) announced that the multinational was an advanced stage of developing a new battery technology. The new technology would allow batteries to charge extremely fast over and above increased storage capacity. The institute went on to intimate that the technology would be useful not only for smartphones or other such devices but also electric vehicles.
Presently, people are increasingly relying on fast-charge technology. The fast-charge innovation shortens the time that batteries need to become fully charged to one hour, down from two hours that a cell takes to be fully charged when under regular charging. Samsung had to develop a new battery altogether to achieve its goal. The new battery incorporates the use of graphene and as opposed to silicon currently used in lithium technology. Also, it is 100 times more efficient than copper.
While it has not been proven, Samsung’s new battery technology could lead to a longer battery life than that witnessed in batteries currently used in smartphones and electric cars. Although Samsung has not spoken regarding how long the cells that incorporate the new technology would take before they are fully drained of energy, their ability to be charged in slightly over ten minutes make them convenient.
As if the news about the new battery technology is not enough, Samsung announced that it had found a way of mass producing the revolutionary batteries at an “affordable cost.” However, the tech giant did not mention when it expects to roll out the new batteries or whether it will incorporate them into its future devices especially the smartphones. Nevertheless, it is comforting that we may soon be able to charge our smartphone batteries in record time—12 minutes.

Samsung’s newly developed battery technology should charge smartphones, tablets, and electric cars in minutes flat, claims Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology.

The company affirms that the recent tech needs only 12 minutes to fully charge a device that now requires an hour to fill up, even with the use of fast-charge.

Samsung says that the technology utilizes graphene, a thin layer of carbon atoms procured out of graphite, which conducts electricity 100 times more productively than copper. The material transports energy 140 times quicker than the up-to-date silicon-based, lithium batteries, giving hope for a faster recharge than ever before.

Potentially, the new tech could increase battery’s energy-holding volume and provide its devices or cars with longer battery life. At this early stage, just how long these batteries could last is a mystery; however, the high-speed charging would mean uncommonly quick fill-ups, making the battery exponentially more user-friendly in the small span of daily time it would take. Spending the few daily minutes it might take to check in with a charger could lead to never running out of battery at all.

Current fast-charging tech in devices provides a 50% charge in thirty minutes, which is significantly quicker than a “regular” charge, giving a full charge in about two hours. The brand-new technology, however, would completely change the game.

We Could be Only Two Years Away from Having Electric Commercial Airplanes

In a world marked by ever-changing technologies, it is difficult to identify those advancements that are truly unique. That said, there are those discoveries and creations that only come a few times in a generation and are undeniably revolutionary. One such advancement was announced this week: electric planes. A group of European companies has commenced the process of developing airplanes that run on electricity. The first hybrid electric test plane of this kind is expected in 2020.
The project for creating this hybrid electric test plane has been dubbed E-Fan X and is a collaboration between Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and Siemens. Rather than build a new aircraft from scratch, the trio will first use a modified four-engine aircraft. The goal of the project is to replace at least two of the plane’s four fuel-driven engines with two two megawatt electric motors. The various aspects of production needed to complete the project will be divided between the three companies based on their individual strengths.
Should the project be successful, we could see commercial flights employing the same electric technology on a wide scale within the next seven to eight years. However, an electric future for commercial airlines could arrive even earlier as there are other large players also actively exploring the concept. Another collaborative effort between industry giant Boeing and Bluejet hopes to an electric test plane flying by 2022.
Electric airplanes would be greatly beneficial to the environment. While fuel emissions from airplanes are not discussed as much as with cares or ships, they still contribute towards the pollution of the environment. In fact, it is estimated that commercial airlines contribute as much as two percent of the carbon emissions that currently contribute towards climate change. Consequently, by cutting out the need for fuel, the proposed electric planes would reduce emissions and by extension levels of environmental pollution. The invention would also make economic sense as fuel is consistently reported as one of the main costs for airlines.

Facebook has rolled out an Artificial Intelligence technology that aims at detecting suicidal posts. The AI will make a scan of all posts made by a particular individual, and if the feeds show pre-suicidal attempts, a message will be sent to the user’s friends or the local-first responders. The AI will decrease the time required to send help to the user by flagging worrisome posts and sending notifications to human moderators. The AI will scour through billions of data around the world besides the EU. The European Union has stringent measures against profiling people based on the sensitive information. As a result, the complexities of using such tech in the region is prohibited by law.

The AI is designed such that it prioritizes critical reports. It will also come up with the closest first-responder contact info. Additionally, Facebook is training more responders on methods of dealing with suicidal cases 24/7. They have partnered with several organizations that provide support services to victims. Mark Zuckerberg praised the AI saying that in the future, it will have the capability of identifying cases of bullying among many others. Victims get connected to health experts and organizations that can offer help.

The AI will detect any Facebook post that expresses suicidal thoughts and flag it. When the information reaches the Facebook tech, they can proceed and highlight the suicidal part. The AI also prioritizes user reports over other content-policy violations. After all the info gets verified (usually very fast), the moderator proceeds to make a call to the responders closest to the user at risk. The AI is about saving minutes that may prove vital to avoiding a suicide. According to Guy Rosen, the VP of product management, the company’s goal is to have a response team that can offer support through a variety of languages.

The First Hybrid Plane to Go on its Maiden Flight in 2020

It is expected that the first demonstration of a hybrid plane will hit the skies by 2020. Airbus, Siemens, and Rolls-Royce are running the E-Fan X program that’s expected to manufacture a BAe 146 aircraft. The aircraft will constitute three jet engines and one electric engine.
